Global Water Bankruptcy: An Analysis of the Latest UN Water Report

The latest UN report speaks for the first time of a global water bankruptcy. Around the world, numerous water systems are increasingly losing their ability to regenerate naturally—with far-reaching consequences for the economy and society.

Our fund manager Stefan Schütz analyzes these developments and explains why the global water crisis is primarily an infrastructure and efficiency problem. He also explains why this presents long-term investment opportunities in the water sector, particularly in the areas of water infrastructure, technology, and efficiency solutions.

Focus on water funds: global challenges and investment potential

Although around 71% of the earth’s surface is covered by water, clean water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource. Around 40% of the world’s population is already affected by water scarcity. This development requires considerable investment and innovation in the water sector. The Tareno Global Water Solutions Fund offers investors the opportunity to make targeted investments in companies that are developing solutions to the challenges of water availability.

Water management and its drivers

  • Although the Earth has an unimaginable amount of water – around 1.4 billion cubic kilometers – only a small proportion of it is directly usable by humans. This is because around 97.5% is salt water in our seas and oceans. Of the 2.5% fresh water, 69% is bound up in glaciers, 30% is groundwater and only 1% flows on the surface and is readily available to humans.
  • Added to this is the uneven distribution of water. While Europe, and Switzerland in particular, has sufficient water supplies, the situation in other regions, such as Africa, is very different. Due to its weight, transporting water involves high costs and considerable effort and poses major challenges for water-poor regions.
  • Inefficient use also exacerbates the problem. One drop of water per second from a leaking pipe wastes more than 6,500 liters per year. This illustrates how important it is to expand and maintain existing infrastructure.
  • Water consumption is rising continuously: Today, we use ten times more water worldwide than we did in 1900. In Switzerland alone, the average daily consumption in 2022 was 287 liters per person – many times the minimum of 50 liters required for survival. It is worth noting that this figure only includes water consumption from public sources and not the quantities of water required for imported products and services.

Global Water Fund with an Active Investment Approach

Ensuring global water supply requires significant investment in infrastructure and innovative technologies. The Tareno Global Water Solutions Fund is an actively managed water fund that invests globally in companies across the entire value chain of the water sector.

With over 20 years of experience, our investment team specifically identifies companies that develop solutions for key challenges such as water treatment, smart irrigation systems, and coping with extreme weather events. The focus is on technologies that improve access to water and promote its efficient use—without investing directly in water rights or drinking water.

For investors seeking both returns and impact, an impact share class is available, in which a portion of the management fee is invested in drinking water projects. Additionally, the fund offers various tranches in CHF, EUR, and USD for both private and institutional investors.

The fund stands out for its long-term performance and recognized quality: Since its launch in September 2007, the W-EUR tranche has achieved a performance of +308% (as of March 2026). In 2025, the fund was awarded the “Goldener Bulle” for the best performance among all water funds and ETFs. In addition, in 2026 it received the Lipper Fund Award for the second consecutive year in the “Equity Theme – Water” category for its risk-adjusted performance over three years. The sustainability approach is regularly reviewed and has been awarded the highest rating of the FNG Label on multiple occasions.

Tareno, as an asset manager, has also received multiple awards, including being named Asset Manager of the Year by BILANZ seven times in a row.
