Improved access to clean drinking water in Madagascar

Access to clean drinking water is not a matter of course for many people in the south of Madagascar. Recurring droughts, increasing weather extremes and a poorly developed infrastructure make it difficult to ensure a safe water supply in one of the poorest regions in the world. The consequences of the lack of water infrastructure affect women and children in particular. We are therefore all the more pleased about Tareno's involvement in this project, which provides a safe drinking water supply for over 28,000 people in the south of Madagascar.

Tatirano: Project partner in Madagascar

This project in the south of Madagskar is the first that we have implemented with our project partner Tatirano Social Entreprise. Tatirano is a non-profit organization with the aim of empowering women and lifting people out of poverty by creating long-term access to clean water. The organization operates exclusively in Madagascar and has built a modern water supply system on site.

The system is based on a traditional practice in the region: for generations, communities have used hollowed-out baobab trees to store water during the rainy season. Tatirano has developed this idea further. The water is collected at safe extraction points, treated and then stored in large ferrocement storage tanks (“baobabs”). From there, it is distributed to the communities via local extraction points.

Expansion of the Baobab Network: Impact investing with real impact

The project was financed in part by donations from the impact share class of the Tareno Water Fund. It includes the expansion of the Baobab Network in the south of Madagascar and improves access to clean drinking water for over 28,000 people. Tareno financed the WATA-Plus chlorine plant. This uses locally produced salt and pure water from Tatirano’s rainwater treatment program to produce a chlorine solution that is used to purify the water in the Baobab Network. The system is operated and monitored locally and community members have been trained in its operation, maintenance and hygiene. Further details, information on the other financing partners and pictures of the implementation can be found in the project description.
