Independent portfolio analysis: Greater clarity for your assets

What should you do when performance disappoints despite favorable markets? An independent analysis often reveals where the real problem lies—whether in asset management, strategy, or product selection. A practical example.

The starting point: A portfolio review at Tareno

A married couple approached us with the request to have their investment portfolio reviewed independently. Both are working and aim to be able to draw on their savings in part when they retire. Their previous asset manager had disappointed them in recent years—performance was unsatisfactory despite positive market conditions. The couple asked themselves: Is it the strategy, the implementation—or both?

Analysis: Weaknesses in the portfolio uncovered

Our portfolio analysis revealed clear characteristics: cluster risks, many non-transparent products, a high proportion of illiquid investments, unnecessarily high fees, and significant interest rate and currency risks. Particularly problematic were foreign currency bonds with long maturities until 2050 and alternative investments whose risks were either not clearly communicated or not properly understood. The lack of transparency, limited tradability of products, and incomprehensible investment strategy ultimately led to a massive loss of confidence.

Conclusion: Why independent investment advice can be worthwhile

A well-founded second opinion can be crucial. Those who understand their investment strategy make better decisions—today and for the future.

We recommended a clear, understandable, equity-heavy dividend strategy focused on liquid direct investments, stable returns, broad diversification, and cost-efficient products. In the future, the couple will deliberately avoid internally managed products and hard-to-sell investments, as well as unnecessarily high foreign currency risks. The goal was to create a portfolio with which the couple could once again identify. Foreign currency bonds and illiquid positions were reduced immediately wherever possible. The result: a strategically structured portfolio that not only performs better, but also gives the couple back the good feeling of being in control of their financial future. They implemented the recommendations in full and are now noticeably happier and more confident than before.
